Can I frame a pastel drawing?
A pastel painting or drawing therefore needs to be framed behind glass as soon as possible to protect it. Once it is properly framed it will last for a very long time indeed. Unframed pastel paintings should be stored flat, with sheets of glassine paper over it to protect it from smudges.

Once you’ve finished your work, if you need to protect it from being smudged, use Fixative Spray that is made for specifically this purpose. Hairspray will also work in a pinch. Only do this once you’re finished though – since it will make it near impossible to add more chalk once it’s done.
